Life Transitions

I like change. It excites me. While sometimes it can be unsettling, I've learned it's better to accept change because change is unavoidable, and when you accept it, everything seems to work better. Choosing to like change is even better because it puts a positive perspective on an inevitable concept, which in theory is the same thing as choosing happiness.

So, there's that. :)

Now what are these life transitions that my blog title implies I'm experiencing?

First, I've recently moved back to the SF Bay Area after being in San Diego for the last 6 years. Of course, it was difficult to say good-bye to all the wonderful people I've met through my experiences at UCSD as both an undergraduate and a researcher, and it was also difficult to say good-bye to the culture as I had become involved in the community with soccer, art, the gym, yoga, dance, and hiking. My first day back in the Bay Area was a bit sad, but I spent the afternoon at the beach in Half Moon Bay, and I was lucky enough to watch two whales playing in the water for an hour. My experience in one word: gratitude. Furthermore, I was gifted a perspective change to positively interpret my geographic transition, acknowledging what I have gained versus what I have left behind. Better yet, this mindset is applicable to future locations in the event that I move again for a career.

Second, I'm ready for a career change! My main objective for leaving SD was to pursue a career in tech and/or consulting, and the opportunities to do so are better in SF and the Silicon Valley. I'm the kind of person who makes a one week goal (accomplishes it, and immediately makes another goal), rather than a one year goal. I love fast-paced, social working environments, both inside and outside an office setting. While I enjoyed my time working in neuroscience, the specific research pace I was involved with is more suitable to the minds who set one year goals, or even five year goals. While I highly respect my peers, I've decided it's no longer the best place for me and I'd like to work in an industry where I can integrate research, problem-solving and business/marketing. Plus, just because I'm no longer working in neuroscience, it doesn't mean I can't nerd out on the brain from time to time! [Fun fact: favorite area of the brain = hippocampus!]

In one week, I've experienced new places, new people, new skills, and new goals. What remains the same is my motivation to accomplish everything I set my mind to, so bring it, San Francisco! I'm ready to break glass ceilings and have fun doing it.
